<font color="#c0c0c0"><a name="society"> Sozialorganisation</a></font></p> <p><font color="#c0c0c0">Bei den Haida gibt es zwei gesellschaftliche Gruppen, die Raben und die Adler. Diese sind unterteilt in Familien. Früher lebte immer nur eine Familie in einem Dorf. Inzwischen sind die Grenzen zwischen den Gruppen nicht mehr so streng. Es ist jedoch immer noch üblich, dass nur Mitglieder der anderen Gesellschaftsgruppe als Heiratspartner in Frage kommen. Durch die Zugehörigkeit zu einer Familie erhielt man die Nutzungsrechte für bestimmte Jagd-, Fisch- und Sammelgebiete. Legenden und Mythen wurden innerhalb der Familie weiter vererbt und Namen gehörten zum Besitz von Familien. Eine durchschnittliche Familie bestand aus bis zu vierzig Mitgliedern. Die Häuptlingsfamilien, die den größten Einfluss besaßen, konnten mit ihren Sklaven bis zu einhundert Personen umfassen. Die Häuptlingswürde gehörte meist dem Familienvorstand der größten und einflußreichsten Familiengruppe.</font></p> <p><font color="#c0c0c0">Bei den höherrangigen Familien war es üblich, sich bei Festen, den sogenannten Potlatches, zu messen. Dabei wurden oft über Jahre Geschenke angehäuft, die dann bei den Feierlichkeiten den Gästen geschenkt wurden.
