<a name="vorgeschichte">Prähistorie</a></font><p> <font color="#C0C0C0">Haida Gwaii, so nennen die Haida ihre Inselheimat, die schon lange von ihren Vorfahren bewohnt wurde. Archäologische Funde werden auf ein Alter von bis zu 9000 Jahren datiert. Wissenschaftler gehen heute davon aus, dass früher bis zu 30000 Menschen auf den Queen Charlotte Inseln gelebt haben. Vor allem im Süden der Inselwelt weisen zahlreiche Siedlungsreste darauf hin.</font></p> <p><font color="#C0C0C0">Einen Hinweis darauf, dass die Haida die Inseln seit der letzten Eiszeit bewohnen, liefern zahlreiche Legenden und Mythen, in denen vom Vorrücken des Eises berichtet wird oder die Rede ist von Überschwemmungen. Untersuchungen der Hecate Strait haben gezeigt, dass sich vor etwa 13000 bis 11000 Jahren an dieser Stelle eine grasbewachsene Tiefebene befand, so dass die Strecke zwischen den heutigen Inseln und dem Festland zu Fuß zu durchqueren war. Erst als die Gletscher vor 10000 Jahren schmolzen, bildete sich der Meeresarm, dessen Wasser zu bestimmten Zeiten sogar noch höher stand als heute.Die Haida passten sich gut an diese Lebensbedingungen an. Archäologischen Funden zufolge kannten sie von frühester Zeit an seetüchtige Kanus, mit denen sie die Strecke zu den Festlandstämmen zurücklegen konnten. Obsidian, das ist vulkanisches Glas, das zur Herstellung von Werkzeugen verwendet wurde und dessen Herkunft zu den Queen Charlotte Inseln zurückverfolgt werden kann, findet sich auch bei den Festlandsstämmen. Schon früh müssen demnach Handelsbeziehungen bestanden haben.Neben der Jagd und dem Fischfang lebten die Haida in prähistorischer Zeit vom Sammeln von Muscheln. Darauf deuten zahlreiche Abfallhaufen hin, die von Muschelschalen überquellen.
