Ihre Erfahrung in der Seefahrt, ihre ausgezeichneten Boote und der Schutz, den ihnen ihre Inselheimat bot ließen sie zu gefürchteten Angreifern entlang der Küste British Columbias werden. Sie zogen vor allem los, um Gegenstände zu rauben, die sie bei ihren Potlatchfesten verschenken konnten - Kupferplatten, Chilkatdecken und Sklaven.</font></p> <p><font color="#C0C0C0">Dabei waren sie besonders erfolgreich bei Seeschlachten, die ihre Gegner versuchten zu vermeiden. Bei den Tsimshianindianern gab es sogar eine Art Frühwarnsystem, bei dem sie Signalfeuer entzündeten, die drohende Haidaangriffe ankündigten. In ihrer Kriegslust gingen sie sogar so weit, europäische Schiffe anzugreifen. Häuptling Wiah von Masset gelang der Sieg über das Schiff <i>Susan Sturgis</i>. Befestigte Stützpunkte gehörten bereits in prähistorischer Zeit zu der Verteidigungsstrategie der Haida. Captain James Cook war beeindruckt von einer Haidafestung, die Palisaden, Verteidigungsanlagen, Fallen und Kampfplattformen aufwies.</font></p> <p><font color="#C0C0C0">Sogar Rüstungen kannten die Haidakrieger. Dazu gehörten Kriegshelme mit Visieren, Brustschutz, einer starken Lederrüstung aus Seelöwen- oder Elchhaut. Ihre ursprünglichen Waffen - Pfeil und Bogen und Kurzspeer - wurden bald durch Feuerwaffen der Europäer ersetzt. Kriegsdolche verwendeten sie aber auch später noch im Nahkampf.
